Jerusalem/Gaza Strip – The remains of Master Sergeant Ran Gvili, the last Israeli hostage held in the Gaza Strip, have been located and transferred to Israel following an intensive search operation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced this today. With this recovery, all Israelis abducted during the Hamas attacks of 7 october 2023 – alive or dead – have now been brought home.

Gvili, a 24-year-old officer in an elite unit of the Israeli police, was killed during fighting at Kibbutz Alumim and subsequently taken by Hamas militants. After months of searching, his body was discovered and identified in a cemetery in the northern Gaza Strip. Family members were informed by the military once the identification process was completed.
Symbolic significance
The death of Ran Gvili has resonated deeply within Israel and carried major political weight. Families of hostages and large segments of the Israeli public had forcefully demanded that no further steps in the Peace process be taken until he was returned to Israel.
Today’s recovery marks the end of a hostage crisis that lasted more than 840 days. Gvili will now be laid to rest in Israel.
Who was Ran Gvili?
Ran “Rani” Gvili was a 24-year-old Israeli police officer and member of a police special unit who lost his life during the devastating Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 october 2023. His story has deeply moved the country – not only because of the tragic circumstances of his death, but also because of his character, his commitment to others, and the long months of hope his family held onto.
Early life
Ran Gvili was born in Meitar, a town in southern Israel, to his parents Talik and Itzik Gvili. He had a brother and a sister.
From a young age, he demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility. One story from his school years is often recalled: when classmates planned to attend a bar mitzvah, Ran organized for everyone to instead attend the celebration of a classmate with special needs, so he would not be left alone.
Military and police career
At the age of 18, Gvili joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and served in the Golani Brigade, one of the country’s most respected infantry units. Despite being injured during basic training, he persisted, returned to service, and served as a combat soldier and later as a platoon commander.
In 2021, he joined the Yasam special patrol unit of the Israeli Police, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant Major, reflecting both his experience and leadership abilities.
Personality
Friends and family described Rani as physically strong yet warm-hearted and deeply compassionate – someone whose presence “could be felt the moment he entered a room”.
He was passionate about motorcycles, played the guitar, and enjoyed hands-on work. During a break from duty, he spent time helping build and renovate his family’s home.
7 october 2023 – Courage and death
On the morning of 7 october 2023, Gvili was preparing for a scheduled shoulder surgery. When he learned of the large-scale Hamas attacks on Israeli communities, he did not hesitate. He put on his police uniform and headed toward the embattled border areas near Kibbutz Alumim to help.
Despite existing injuries, he fought alongside his comrades. During the clashes near Alumim and while assisting in the rescue of survivors from the vicinity of the Nova music festival, he showed extraordinary bravery – reportedly saving numerous lives and engaging attackers before being mortally wounded. His body was taken to Gaza by Hamas militants.
The Struggle
After his death, Israeli authorities confirmed in January 2024 that Gvili had fallen and that his body had been taken to the Gaza Strip. Since then, his family, supported by nationwide attention, fought tirelessly for the return of his remains. They demanded that Peace and ceasefire negotiations not advance to the next stage until Ran was brought home and buried.
His nickname “The Defender of Alumim” reflects the deep respect many Israelis hold for his courage and sacrifice.
Legacy
Gvili is remembered by many as a symbol of selflessness and duty – someone who, despite his own injuries, immediately rushed to help others and fought until the very end. His return also marks an emotional closing chapter for many families in Israel who have struggled for years to recover their loved ones.
Phase two of the Peace plan
With the return of all hostages, one of the central conditions for advancing the US-brokered Peace plan has been fulfilled. According to sources in Jerusalem and international media, this opens the door to the second phase of the agreement, which originated in part under the Trump administration. It includes:
The reopening of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, crucial for trade and humanitarian aid.
The beginning of the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, including the dismantling of heavy weapons held by armed groups.
The establishment of an international stability and security framework, accompanied by a transitional administration and initial reconstruction efforts.
Israel’s government had long tied the resumption of this second phase to the full return of all hostages. With today’s recovery, that condition has been met, and officials state that this now marks the “transition from ceasefire to lasting stability”.
International reactions and challenges
The development has been welcomed internationally, while observers have also emphasized the ongoing challenges ahead. The demilitarization of Gaza, the creation of a functioning civilian administration, and sustainable reconstruction remain politically complex and highly sensitive tasks.

UPDATE/45,000 Murders in 2 Days: The biblical dimension of the crushing of Iranian protests
When “God” is the One in Whose Name is tortured, the moral compass begins to waver. Whoever then abandons the Sacred loses the ground of absolute Justice beneath their feet.
Following in Iran’s footsteps: Turkey threatens Israel with annihilation
Over 1,200 people were massacred on october 7, 2023 – how would Turkey react if it were in Israel’s place?
On behalf of Israel: Thank you, Hezbollah!
Thank you for causing the Lebanese troops to withdraw because of your arrogance. Without you, Israel would have no international legitimacy to claim a part of Allah’s Promise: from the Nile to the Euphrates. Thank you for being the opposite of Allah’s party: idolaters and therefore so God-forsaken.
Khamenei: And he was not the Holy Spirit
A human assumes the Title “Ruhollah” as if it were an honorary distinction. How can a human bear a name that denotes the Angel Gabriel, or compare himself with a Verse from the Holy Quran, “Ayatollah”, the Holy of Holies that is on earth today? Undoubtedly, this arrogance through religious symbolism casts another shadow over shiism.
