Anthropic Enters Pharmaceutical Research – Is a “Miracle Cream” for Tattoo Removal Coming Soon?

San Francisco: It began with a rumor about a tattoo removal cream. In the end, what emerged was the realization that the Truth is almost more absurd than the rumor itself: a family-run company that actually builds language models is now indeed researching pharmaceuticals. The cream is said to serve as a benchmark for the impossible—though it would, in fact, make many people happy.

When Anthropic announced at the end of june that it would begin researching its own active pharmaceutical ingredients for neglected diseases, many observers saw this as more than just another product announcement. For those familiar with the history of this extremely popular company, the move seemed to bring things full circle—back to the beginnings of its co-founder.

Two Very Different Paths

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, began his academic career as a physicist. Upon earning a bachelor’s degree in physics at Stanford University, he moved to Princeton University for his PhD—though not in theoretical physics, yet in biophysics. His dissertation focused on the electrophysiology of neuronal circuits. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford School of Medicine, studying computational methods for protein analysis, including the detection of metastatic cancer cells.

His sister Daniela, now President of Anthropic, took a completely different path. She studied English literature with a minor in political science at the University of California, then worked in politics, followed by roles in business at Stripe and later at OpenAI as Vice President of Safety and Policy—before co-founding Anthropic with her brother in 2021.

A Family Event, Two Interpretations

Both siblings lost their father, Riccardo Amodei, in 2006—an Italian-American leather craftsman who had long struggled with health issues. Journalist Alex Kantrowitz described in a widely read Medium profile how Dario Amodei shifted his doctoral focus from theoretical physics to biological questions upon his father’s death, with the aim of contributing to the understanding of human disease.

Whether this forms a direct line to Anthropic’s current push into drug discovery for “neglected diseases” remains speculative. Neither Dario nor Daniela Amodei has explicitly linked the move publicly to their father’s death.

The Real Step: From Workshop to Laboratory

At an event for pharmaceutical executives, biotech founders, and researchers in San Francisco, Anthropic announced two developments on june 30, 2026: the launch of Claude Science, a dedicated AI workspace for biopharmaceutical research, and—more significantly—its own internal drug discovery program.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s Head of Life Sciences, explained that the company wants to experience drug development “up close” in order to derive better models and tools for the entire industry. His colleague Jonah Cool, responsible for partnerships in life sciences, added that Anthropic deliberately intends to focus on diseases that the commercial market tends to overlook.

With this, Anthropic is positioning itself not just as a supplier of tools for pharmaceutical companies, yet for the first time as an active participant in the drug development process—a step no major AI lab has taken in this form so far.

Which Diseases Are Targeted?

So far, Anthropic has named only one concrete example: phenylketonuria, a rare inherited metabolic disorder in which the body cannot properly break down the amino acid phenylalanine. During the announcement, Alexander Tarashansky, who led the development of Claude Science, demonstrated how the system could independently identify new drug candidates for this very condition.

Beyond that, the focus remains deliberately broad: “neglected” and rare diseases—conditions that traditional pharmaceutical companies often avoid for purely commercial reasons, because patient populations are too small or development costs are too high relative to market potential. Anthropic has not published a full list. Budget, timeline, and whether discovered candidates would ever be brought to market, licensed, or handed off to partners also remain open questions. Kauderer-Abrams emphasized that the work will initially be limited to the preclinical phase—that is, research conducted before a drug ever enters human trials.

The Potential—and the Limits

The appeal is obvious: companies like Anthropic possess computational resources and AI systems that traditional research labs do not. If a model can simulate protein structures, search vast biomedical databases, and propose drug candidates in days instead of months, at least the earliest and most time-consuming stage of drug discovery could be significantly accelerated. Especially for neglected diseases—where there are often too few researchers and too little funding—this could be a meaningful lever.

As a public benefit corporation, Anthropic states that it can select programs based on patient benefit rather than expected financial return—a structural advantage over publicly traded pharmaceutical companies.

At the same time, expectations should not be overstated. The path from a promising molecule in a computer model to an approved drug is notoriously long, expensive, and marked by high failure rates—unfortunately years of animal testing, multi-phase clinical trials, and regulatory review lie in between. Even Anthropic has not suggested that it will deliver a market-ready drug in the near future. “Curing diseases” remains, for now, a vision rather than a concrete promise—even if the ambition behind it appears to be genuine.

Complementary Roles

Regardless of underlying motivations, it is widely agreed that the division of roles between the siblings has been central to Anthropic’s rise. Dario oversees the company’s research direction and technical vision; Daniela leads operations—finance, sales, partnerships, recruiting, and safety.

Whatever the deeper personal motivations may be, with Claude Science and its announced drug discovery program for neglected diseases, Anthropic is clearly moving closer to the field in which one of its founders once conducted research—before fully turning to artificial intelligence.
