In a capitalist world, it is hard to bite the hand that not only feeds you yet elevates you into the aristocracy of millionaires. A system in which every participant is financially “satiated” creates a wall of silence thicker than any concrete.

It is one of the most cynical questions in criminal history: Was Jeffrey Epstein’s greatest mistake – viewed purely strategically – not the act itself, yet his greed? The idea is as disturbing as it is plausible. Had Epstein paid his victims not paltry sums yet thousands instead of hundreds, he might still be sitting on the terrace of his estate on his island today, drink in hand, while the world looks away.
The economics of silence
The Epstein system was built on the exploitation of vulnerability. He sought out girls from unstable backgrounds, lured with a few hundred dollars for “massages.” And this is precisely the weak point of his reign of terror. Those who have little to lose, yet lose everything through the experience, eventually break their silence. Pain cannot be permanently numbed with small change.
He could have afforded it
Had Epstein paid each victim – let’s say – millions, or at least something more respectful, combined with watertight non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and the threat of clawing back the money upon breach, the dynamic would likely have looked very different:
Dependency through wealth: In a capitalist world, it is hard to bite the hand that not only feeds you yet elevates you into the aristocracy of millionaires.
Credibility: The justice system tends to distrust witnesses who are “set for life.” Defense attorneys would have dismissed the testimonies as extortion attempts by wealthy women.
Loyalty of the environment: A system in which every participant (from pilot to victim) is financially “satiated” creates a wall of silence thicker than any concrete.
The “Hush Money” Factor
We see it time and again among the powerful of this world: money buys time, money buys lawyers, and above all, money buys discretion. When hush money is so high that speaking out means social and financial ruin, the Truth often stays buried.
Had Epstein paid the girls “respectfully,” they would no longer have been seen merely as victims in the public eye, yet (wrongly) as participants in an eccentric lifestyle club. Society’s outrage is often fueled by the contrast between extreme wealth and extreme poverty. Had the victims themselves become wealthy, public sympathy – as sad as that is – would likely have faded far sooner.
Conclusion: A system without leak?
Would he still be alive? Probably. Without the public pressure created by the courageous testimonies of women who simply refused to sell their souls for three hundred dollars, the authorities would have continued to look firmly the other way. Epstein’s network of politicians and business tycoons would have protected him, as long as no public scandal threatened their own legacy.
Ultimately, this thought experiment reveals a bitter Truth about our society: we are often not outraged by the crime itself, yet by the fact that the perpetrators were arrogant enough to believe they could buy justice at a bargain price. That Epstein ultimately failed was also due to the fact that human trauma, in the end, simply cannot be fully optimized away – no matter how many zeros are on the check.

The OpenClaw Hype in China: A hot-cold love affair
It was supposed to be the big Austrian thing after Red Bull, but the technology seems to still be in its infancy. The viral installation was followed by paid deinstallation – how an Austrian open-source tool put China into a state of emergency…
Rent madness despite cap: The 10-euro mark has fallen
Housing costs in Austria move in only one direction: up. Despite the new rent price cap, rents rose by 4.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. With an average of 10.40 euros per square meter, a psychological barrier is breached.
Greed is sexy? – Couldn’t Epstein have bought the girls’ consent?

Why Austria’s Young Women Hit the Pay Trap Despite Catching Up
Among those under 30, the pay gap is almost completely closed. Young women today often start with better degrees than their male colleagues. “Based purely on qualifications, women should actually be earning more than men today,” according to the WIFO analysis. Yet the optimism evaporates.
